After Taupo we drove into the Tongariro National Park with some even more impressive scenery and as you climb higher into the park you can look back over Lake Taupo and up at the impressive peaks of Mt. Tongariro, Mt. Ruapehu & Mt. Ngauruhoe, which has the distinction of doubling for Mt. Doom in the LOTR, it’s actually impressive stuff…
Not so impressive were the high price you pay for being a captive audience there, so being the cheapscates that we are, we declined the v. scruffy room at a premium price and instead decided to carry on down the road to see what else the interior of the North Island had to offer us.
