ppppp…..pick up a wobbegong!

Drove back from Waitomo into Auckland today, and the plan was to go drop our stuff at tonight's hotel before heading back into Auckland. I was very sleepy though, so decided to hand the driving reigns over to Suz, so whilst I dozed, Suz and the sat-nav did a great job of getting through the city.

Trying to find Kelly Tarlton’s Arctic Experience though was fun, there are many roads named the same thing in this city, but got there eventually and went in.

It’s really cool in there (pun intended), with a whole colony of Emperor penguins that you can get in a buggy and drive past whilst they look on in bemusement at you. Suz and I had a competition to see who could hold their hands in the ice water for the longest, and after both getting frost-bite, we gave up, we’re both obstinate!

The walk through dome underneath the sharks was obviously the highlight though,  and they we’re just feeding them too, so all the sharks, rays and fishies were super-active, all apart from the wobbegong (a down-under type of shark) who they had to entice with fish-on-a-stick ™ before giving up the enticement routine and just poking the damn thing with a fish!

After that we wondered around the rest of the fishy exhibits, panicking slightly when I wondered ‘what that bulging bit of sealant was doing on the dome’, poking it and finding water gushing out under high pressure when I did! Oops!

So, off to bed now as it’s early start to go see Lee & Jane over in Sydney!
