Surf Highway!

Dude! Like, waaay excellent scenery! Wanganui to New Plymouth was a bit of a trek, but right along the Tasmin sea. We stopped a brief couple of times when we could get down to the beach, but all in all it was a lot of winding roads, with loads of hairpin bends again, and we were running out of daylight to get into New Plymouth (we thought). All along this route though was surfer heaven, every town that we blew through was surf-centric with Billabong shops and waster lodgings everywhere. Like, toootally.

As we rounded the Egmont Peninsula the land started to become dominated by a lone peak, Mt. Taranaki, a beautiful single cone of a mountain, which Maori legend believe ran away from the other peaks of Tongariro

The Surf Highway curls right around this mountain along the sea right up to New Plymouth, so we cruised into town at around 18.30 to find somewhere to kip, before heading out for a nice evening walk along the sea front, looking out over the Tasmin Sea.
